Description
Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy (HOCM) is a condition wherein the muscular septum separating the lower two chambers of the heart get thickened. This leads to the blocking or narrowing of the left ventricle that supplies the blood to the aorta and rest of the body which results in limited blood flow. The ventricles need to work harder to pump the blood. This heart condition can be treated surgically by a procedure called septal myectomy. In this surgical repair, the surgeon eliminates a portion of the thickened septal wall to widen the obstructed outflow tract of the heart (i.e. the path from the left ventricle to the aorta). This treatment is performed when other medications are not helping and valve regurgitation (backward flow of the blood) is taking place.
